Easy-to-use AEDs save lives while spurring long-term growth for Guilford company

Guilford, CT
September 28, 2012

By making easy-to-use automated external defibrillators (AEDs), Defibtech has enabled thousands of people around the world, who often have no previous rescue experience, to save sudden cardiac arrest victims. Marcum LLP and the Connecticut Technology Council recognized Defibtech as one of the state’s 40 fastest-growing technology companies yesterday evening in Wallingford. Defibtech was one of four life sciences companies receiving the Marcum Tech Top 40 honor.

The company’s growth has been boosted recently by the introduction of the Lifeline™ VIEW AED and by consistent sales in the United States and overseas. The VIEW has a real-time video feature that visually guides the user through each step of a sudden cardiac arrest rescue. For example, when the AED’s audio says, “Place pads on patient’s chest,” the video shows exactly where to place the defibrillator pads.

Defibtech developed the video feature in response to medical studies showing that sudden cardiac arrest survival increases when witnesses to the event have access to and use an AED, rather than waiting for EMS to arrive. “Having an easy-to-use AED encourages the immediate involvement of bystanders and gives them the confidence to provide a life-saving shock,” said Defibtech CEO Dr. Glenn W. Laub.

Survey data compiled by Defibtech and Harris Interactive showed that AED instruction with video, text and diagrams would increase rescuers’ confidence. Of those surveyed, 59 percent expressed confidence in using a basic AED with audio instruction. Adding video, text and diagram displays to an AED increased their confidence up to 95 percent.

“Ever since we began marketing our AEDs about 10 years ago, we have focused on speed to shock, ease of use and reliability – the three most important factors to successfully resuscitating a sudden cardiac arrest victim,” Dr. Laub continued. “It’s gratifying to know that our customers have recognized our AEDs as the ones they would trust in a rescue situation.”

The leading cause of death in the United States, sudden cardiac arrest strikes about 380,000 Americans each year. Only about 8 percent of these victims survive. Most victims do not live primarily because they do not receive shocks quickly enough from an AED.
