Defibtech’s Lifeline ARM Automated Chest Compression Device Wins Prestigious Design Award

July 8, 2015

The Lifeline ARM Automated Chest Compression (ACC) Device has been named a Bronze winner in one of the world’s most prestigious design competitions—the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA)’s 2015 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA).

The Lifeline ARM is a mechanical solution for performing chest compressions when effective manual cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is not possible. Automated and portable, the battery- or AC-powered solution provides chest compressions on adult patients who are in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).  A compression module, which mounts into a frame paired with a backboard, contains the user interface. The device can be used by medical professionals certified in CPR—such as first responders, paramedics, EMTs, and hospital personnel.

Effective CPR requires a high level of excellence in order to have an impact on the survival rate of an SCA victim. When done manually, fatigue can occur in as little as one to two minutes, jeopardizing effectiveness.  The Lifeline ARM ensures that CPR can be performed in compliance with American Heart Association guidelines for compression depth and rate.

The Lifeline ARM was chosen for the award among the more than 1,700 entries from around the world— as IDEA marks its 35th year and IDSA celebrates its 50th anniversary.  The IDSA Board of Directors Chair calls the competition “the authority on design” and says IDEA jurying is “the most rigorous and thoughtful” in the world.  Judging took place at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, home to one of the greatest industrial design collections in the world.  The museum has a partnership with the IDSA.  As a winner, the Lifeline ARM will become part of The Henry Ford Museum’s permanent collection, and will be featured in the Fall edition of INNOVATION, IDSA’s annual Yearbook of IDEA winners.

“For professionals responding to sudden cardiac arrest victims, the Lifeline ARM strengthens the second link in the five-step chain of survival – early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions,” said Defibtech CEO Gintaras Vaisnys. “High quality CPR, along with rapid defibrillation with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) – saves lives.”

In an emergency situation, the Lifeline ARM when used as an adjunct to manual CPR provides extended CPR with minimal interruptions when fatigue, insufficient personnel, or patient transport (e.g., ambulance, intra-hospital) may prohibit the delivery of effective/consistent compressions to the victim. Its award winning design provides portability, speedy deployment, and delivers precise CPR with unmatched operating times.
