New England Journal of Medicine Confirms Effectiveness of Automated External Defibrillators.
GUILFORD, CT – August 12, 2004 – Glenn W. Laub, M.D., chairman of cardiac surgery and director of the Heart Hospital at Saint Francis Medical Center in Trenton, N.J., and co-founder of Defibtech, today called for continued commitment to developing more affordable and easy-to-use automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in response to today's groundbreaking AED study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The Public Access Defibrillation Trial investigators confirmed that the survival of cardiac arrest victims can substantially be improved by placing AEDs in public places and training volunteers how to use them safely and effectively.
"Now that the study has confirmed the effectiveness of AEDs, the next step is to continue to make them more affordable and easy to use," said Dr. Laub. He said that technologic advances have made these devices usable by volunteer rescuers and will continue to improve ease of use. "Already studies have shown that, with minimal training, sixth grade students' performance with AEDs in mock situations is comparable to that of adults," Dr. Laub said.
Dr. Laub said the cost of AEDs is still causing many organizations to solicit donations or limit the number of devices they purchase. "As the purchase demand for AEDs increases, Defibtech and other manufacturers will continue to reduce prices – that in turn will increase public access to defibrillators."
Dr. Laub said Defibtech is leading the AED industry in both usability and affordability. The superior design of Defibtech's AED was recently recognized with an international design award. In addition, Defibtech's Lifeline™ is the market's lowest-priced, fully featured AED, with a list price of $1,495. The award-winning AEDs features an industry-leading feature set including biphasic defibrillation technology, self-testing capability, class-leading user interface and voice prompts, longest operational battery life (up to 7 years), pediatric capability and a professional-grade rugged design. This price includes everything a customer needs to completely deploy this lifesaving solution, including the AED, defibrillation pads and a 5-year, 125-shock battery pack.
