Massachusetts Government Employee Saves a Life with Defibtech Lifeline Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Quick action by a Boston "T" employee saves the life of a passenger suffering from sudden cardiac arrest

BOSTON, MA – April 30, 2004 – Through her rapid decision making and dedication to duty, Michelle McHugo, Chief Inspector for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), saved the life of an elderly passenger on Wednesday night.

Shortly after 11:00 PM on April 28th, McHugo was alerted to the fact that a passenger had collapsed on the platform at the Park Street Station of Boston's subway system known as the "T". McHugo rushed to the victim's side and began performing CPR with the aid of a bystander while other "T" employees retrieved the Defibtech Lifeline AED and brought it to the scene.

In a story published on TheBostonChannel.com, McHugo described how she used the Lifeline to save the stricken passenger: "We hooked it up, put the patches on it, analyzed him. It shocked him once. It said to do CPR again. We did CPR again, it said to shock him again, and the second shock worked."

Serving as a testimonial for the speed with which the life-saving therapy takes effect, Boston Emergency Services' Ian Riley stated in TheBostonChannel.com article, "After a few minutes, he [the victim] started to come around. He knew what happened, and we were able to explain to him a little better what was going on with him and what we were going to be doing and that we were going to be taking him to the hospital." Defibtech is proud to add yet another name to the ever growing list of the lives saved using Defibtech AEDs.

AEDs dramatically improve the chances of surviving sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), which causes the heart to become arrhythmic and stop pumping blood effectively. The majority of SCA victims receiving timely defibrillation survive; without it, fewer than 5 percent of SCA victims live. AEDs deliver a defibrillating electrical shock that restores the heart's rhythm to normal. More than 400,000 people die from SCA annually.

Featuring industry-leading biphasic defibrillation technology, the Defibtech AED is the market's most affordable unit, with a single-unit list price of $1,495 in the United States. The device received an Excellence in Design Award in the medical category from Appliance Manufacturer magazine. Easy to use and portable, the Defibtech AED actually "talks" to the user, giving audible step-by-step instructions on how to give lifesaving defibrillation. The AED's bright coloring and award-winning design makes it easy to find and operate quickly. Having the industry's longest operational battery life, the Defibtech AED is built to the durability standards of professional emergency personnel.
